Solar & heating upgrades
that pay their way.
Solar PV, battery storage, electric heating and controls for rented homes — specified to lift the EPC rating, cut tenants’ bills and make a property easier to let — installed and certified by qualified installers.
At a glance
- Solar PV
- Design, installation and commissioning by certified installers, with DNO notification handled
- Heating
- Electric heating replacements for off-gas properties, hot water cylinders and immersions, smart controls
- Storage
- Battery storage where the usage pattern and tariff make it worthwhile
- For the EPC
- Solar PV improves the current EPC score; the size of the gain depends on the property and the system, and the assessor confirms whether it reaches C before works are agreed
- Electrical work
- Carried out and certified by our own NAPIT-registered electricians
Solar PV
Roof survey, system design, installation and commissioning by certified installers — the route to Smart Export Guarantee payments and a measurable EPC uplift.
Battery storage
Added where a property’s occupancy and tariff justify it, sized to the array rather than sold by the kilowatt-hour.
Electric heating upgrades
High-heat-retention storage heaters and smart electric radiators for off-gas homes — one of the most effective EPC measures for flats with old panel heaters.
Hot water
Cylinder and immersion replacements, timers and smart controls, so hot water stops being the hidden cost on a tenant’s bill.
Heating controls
Smart thermostats, programmers and TRVs — low-cost measures that score on the EPC and reduce complaints about cold homes.
EPC modelling
Each measure assessed for its projected effect on the rating as part of our EPC upgrade programme. For solar, the assessor confirms whether the proposed system is enough to achieve EPC C before any works are agreed.
Energy Networks Association G98/G99; Building Regulations Part P. Summary correct at October 2026.
- Certified installation. Solar PV and battery systems are designed, installed and commissioned by certified installers, and come with the installation certificate that the Smart Export Guarantee, lenders and insurers expect to see.
- Grid connection. Solar systems must be notified to the network operator (G98 for small systems, G99 for larger ones). We handle this as part of the job.
- Electrical certification. PV and heating work involves notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations; our NAPIT registration lets us self-certify it.
- EPC credit. Solar PV improves the current EPC score, and efficient electric heating and controls score too. How much a given system adds depends on the property and the proposed array, which is why the assessor checks it against the C threshold first.
Landlord-focused, not sales-led
We specify for the rating, the tenant’s bills and the letting, not for the biggest system a roof can hold. If a measure will not pay its way for the property, we say so.
Electricians in-house
The electrical side of every solar or heating installation is done and certified by our own team, with the same booking, access and reporting process as our compliance work.
Part of the EPC plan
Solar and heating are usually measures within a wider route to C. Having them alongside insulation, ventilation and controls from one contractor avoids three sets of quotes and three sets of visits.
Will solar get the property to EPC C?
Solar PV reliably improves the current EPC score, but the size of the improvement depends on the property and the proposed system. As part of our EPC programme the assessor checks whether the proposed array will be enough to achieve a C — on its own or alongside other measures — before any works are agreed.
Does solar make sense on a rented property?
Often, yes: it lifts the EPC, lowers the tenant’s bills (which helps letting and retention), and the landlord receives the export payments. It suits houses and top-floor flats with usable roof space; mid-floor flats generally cannot host it.
Who receives the export payments?
The owner of the system — normally the landlord — registers for the Smart Export Guarantee with a supplier and is paid for exported electricity. The tenant benefits from the electricity used in the home.
Is planning permission needed?
Most domestic roof-mounted solar is permitted development, with exceptions for listed buildings, conservation areas and flats. We check before quoting.
What about heat pumps?
Heat pumps can be the right answer for some properties, but they need a well-insulated building and often larger radiators. We advise on suitability as part of the EPC assessment rather than promising one for every home.
How is the work certified?
An installation certificate for the renewable system from the certified installer, electrical certification from our NAPIT registration, DNO confirmation, and manufacturer warranties — all issued at handover.
How quickly can this be done?
Survey and proposal within a couple of weeks of instruction in most cases; installation dates depend on the scope and the tenant’s availability.
